The Sperm DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) test measures the extent of DNA damage in sperm, which is the genetic material crucial for fertilization and embryo development. Assessing sperm DNA integrity is an important tool for evaluating male fertility, as damaged or fragmented DNA can negatively impact conception, embryo development, and may contribute to IVF failure or recurrent miscarriages.

High DFI levels are commonly associated with factors such as advanced age, inflammation of the reproductive organs, varicocele, unhealthy lifestyle habits (like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption), and environmental exposure to radiation or pollution.

While traditional semen analysis evaluates sperm concentration, motility, and morphology and remains the gold standard for assessing male fertility, it does not provide information about the genetic quality of sperm.
